M&E design and installation for Stevenage Indoor Market relocation
When Stevenage Indoor Market relocated into an existing, empty unit beneath residential flats, creating a new indoor trading space made up of multiple independent stalls, we were commissioned by Conamar to deliver the design of the mechanical and electrical installations that turned the shell into a working market. We put in place the building services infrastructure that traders needed to open and operate and the public would benefit from new indoor eating areas and a different and improved feel to the market.
Challenge
This was a refurbishment inside an existing building, which meant success relied on making new services work around real on-site constraints. With a market environment, the brief also demanded repeatability: consistent provision across a high number of units, while still accommodating the higher demands of food vendors.
The programme added another layer of pressure and our installation sequence depended on the stall contractor completing key elements first.
Solution
Our focus was a clear, scalable M&E approach that could be rolled out consistently across the market, while providing for individual vendors specialist needs.
Our electrical team delivered a new incoming supply and a structured distribution approach across the market, giving each of the 45 stalls a dedicated supply arrangement, including distribution board provision to support safe, consistent power distribution across the units. At unit level, the fit out provided the everyday essentials traders rely on, including general power, lighting control, and roller shutter switching.
Food traders required higher demand provision, so we delivered the additional services needed for cooked food trading and safe operation, including new extraction. The project also included two kitchen extract systems, with installation adapted to suit the realities of the existing building and the constraints on site.
In the shared public areas, we delivered power and lighting to main walkway routes, helping create a safe, usable environment for both traders and visitors.

Scope highlights
- Incoming supply and power distribution across 45 units, each with its own supply
- Stall fit out including general power, lighting control, and roller shutter switching
- Food vendor provision including cooker supplies, sockets, extractor hoods and two kitchen extract systems
- Power and lighting to shared walkway areas

Results
The result was a new indoor market location enabled with the building services backbone and repeatable M&E provision needed for multi-tenant trading. 45 units were provided with structured electrical supplies, supporting consistent stall fit out and straightforward handover. Food traders were equipped with the specialist services needed to operate, helping the market accommodate a broader mix of vendors.
Conclusion
Stevenage Indoor Market is another example of Arcade’s building services offer in a multi stakeholder refurbishment setting. It combines structured delivery across a high number of tenant units with tailored solutions for higher demand traders, delivered with the agility needed when existing building constraints change the plan.
We design and install the systems that support buildings and create a healthy environment for the people who use them. M&E installations are the heart and lungs of every building – without them the buildings don’t work. We apply our building services to facilities such as shopping centres, hotels, schools, hospitals and as with this example, indoor markets.
Our mechanical and electrical building services are delivered as one in-house, integrated package making us stand out from the competition. Every project is fully coordinated from design to handover resulting in smoother installations, saving you time and money.
If you are planning a fit out with multiple tenants, public access, or specialist ventilation requirements, we can help you deliver building services that support safe operation and confident occupancy.
