Hearing the high notes at a new state-of-the art opera house

Brand new, state-of-the-art opera house gets the Arcade touch.

Scope of works:

Designed and installed heating, air conditioning, and domestic services for a brand new, state-of-the-art opera house built on a greenfield site. All services run on renewable energy to create a sustainable building.

Nestled in the rolling Chiltern Hills, Garsington Opera House and recording studios are an outstanding, purpose built facility for opera, music, and so much more. The acoustically optimised facilities were specifically designed to enhance their natural surroundings, and honour a commitment to excellence, supporting artists, and providing opportunities for all to engage with opera in a welcoming environment.

Key challenges:

  • A greenfield site and inclement weather created a mud bath that impacted the delivery of materials and work on site.
  • Precise acoustic NR ratings and controlled temperatures were demanded in multiple rooms.
  • This long-term project could have been impacted by high price rises. Vesting and storing materials helped mitigate some of the impact.

Solutions:

  • Acoustically-lined plenums and ducting were installed to meet acoustic standards and ensure ventilation noise was minimised in recording studios and the auditoriums.
  • A Mitsubishi heat pump generates heat for underfloor heating and hot water throughout the building. This green solution removes the need to use fossil
    fuelled boilers.
  • Exacting architectural and aesthetic standards had to be met by all services on site. Designing in REVIT allowed us to deliver the highest quality levels in an
    unobtrusive manner.
