Bringing buildings to life: Full mechanical and electrical support at Allhallows
Refurbishing a Bedford landmark into a modern, multi-use facility
Previously a NatWest bank with eight 1980s-era flats above, the building was in a state of disrepair. We were appointed to transform the space into two distinct zones: a Family Hub for the local council on the ground floor, and eight self-contained, fully refurbished flats above with their own separate entrance on the first floor. The scope included mechanical and electrical design, installation and commissioning across both areas.
A project delivered in two phases
We approached the project as a full design and build, working from a basic client brief to create and deliver detailed construction-ready plans. The Family Hub was delivered as the first phase, handed over in early spring 2025, followed by the flats, which were completed a few months later in summer.
From mains upgrades to air conditioning and from fire alarms to heat recovery, the entire infrastructure was built from scratch. Working from an empty shell of a building, the team rewired the entire site and installed brand-new electrical and mechanical systems throughout.
What was involved?
The electrical package included:
- Full rewiring of eight flats and the Family Hub
- New mains intake and distribution boards
- Fire alarm and intruder alarm systems
- Door entry system with video integration
- Emergency lighting, including automated self-testing units
- Electric heating throughout
On the mechanical side, we delivered:
- Air conditioning systems within the Family Hub
- Full water and plumbing infrastructure
- Heat recovery and ventilation units
As part of our service maintenance offer, we continue to support the council with follow-on works, including additional security and fire system adaptations.
Learning from the inside
For us, the project was about more than just the installation. It was an opportunity to bring electrical and mechanical teams together, working in harmony and delivering truly integrated services. Historically, mechanical and electrical teams are often separate contractors with limited collaboration. For Allhallows, we made it a priority to bridge that gap internally – bringing a joined-up approach that resulted in smoother delivery and better outcomes.
Whatever your requirements, we can offer the complete M&E package, saving you time, money and hassle. Considering your next project, get in touch.
